COLD MAC
Analog utilities with creative mixing and patch surveillance. Combines classic analog computing elements including audio mixing, crossfade/pan, logical comparisons, envelope following, wavefolder, and offset. SURVEY provides meta-control over all functions.440
Capabilities 8
- Comparatorcomparator
- OR (Maximum/Peak) and AND (Minimum/Trough) perform analog logic comparisons on two inputs, choosing the higher or lower value respectively. SURVEY is normalled as the compare reference.440
- Envelope Followerenvelope-follower
- FOLLOW provides integrated envelope following for sidechaining or slew. Accepts trigger/gate for a quick simple envelope. Can be self-patched to SURVEY for cross-modulation.440
- Followerfollower
- LOCATION acts as an integrator/trend follower, slowly shifting output in the direction of input voltage and freezing at 0V. Ideal for CV signals and longform gestural modulation.440
- Mixermixer
- Mixes up to 6 inputs (left-column jacks) to MAC output with linear VCA gain controlled by SURVEY. AC coupled — audio only.440
- Voltage-Controlled Amplifiervca
- SURVEY knob and CV input provide linear voltage-controlled amplification over the MAC mix output. Also a second VCA/PAN/CROSSFADE block with FADE CV control.440
- Voltage-Controlled Crossfadercrossfader
- Two-input, two-output VCA/PAN/CROSSFADE block controlled by SURVEY or FADE CV. Can crossfade between two inputs or pan a single input; LEFT out and RIGHT out provide inverse-faded versions.440
- Wavefolderwavefolder
- CREASE provides aggressive amplitude-sensitive wavefolding for audio or discontinuity induction for CV. In Patch Surveillance mode, 7 wavefolded versions of input are available simultaneously.440
- Waveshaper / Wavefolderwaveshaper
- CREASE provides aggressive amplitude-sensitive wavefolding for audio or discontinuity induction for CV. In Patch Surveillance mode, 7 wavefolded versions of input are available simultaneously.440
Jacks 20 — 11 in / 9 out
| Name | Signal | Voltage | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inputs (11) | |||
| AND(1) | mixed | — | First input to the AND (Minimum/Trough) logic function. Normalled to OR(1).440 |
| AND(2) | mixed | — | Second input to the AND (Minimum/Trough) logic function. Normalled to SURVEY.440 |
| CREASE in | mixed | — | Input to the CREASE wavefolder. Normalled from SLOPE.440 |
| FADE | cv | — | CV input for the VCA/PAN/CROSSFADE block. Patching here delinks the fade/pan from global SURVEY control.440 |
| LEFT | audio | — | Left input of the VCA/PAN/CROSSFADE block. Connect a single input here to pan between LEFT and RIGHT outputs. Also used as one of two inputs in crossfade mode.440 |
| LOCATION in | cv | — | 440 |
| OR(1) | mixed | — | 440 |
| OR(2) | mixed | — | Second input to the OR (Maximum/Peak) logic function. Normalled to SURVEY.440 |
| RIGHT | audio | — | Right input of the VCA/PAN/CROSSFADE block. Used alongside LEFT for crossfade mode. A normalled DC offset is present when unconnected.440 |
| SLOPE | mixed | — | 440 |
| SURVEY CV | cv | — | CV control over SURVEY. Knob position is added to the input as an offset. Accepts slow moving CVs through audio rate modulations.440 |
| Outputs (9) | |||
| AND out | mixed | — | Output of AND (Minimum/Trough) function. Outputs the lower of the two AND inputs.440 |
| CREASE out | audio | — | Output of the CREASE wavefolder. Provides amplitude-sensitive wavefolded audio or CV discontinuity.440 |
| FOLLOW | cv | — | Envelope follower output. Use for sidechaining. Also responds to trigger/gate input to create a quick and simple envelope. Can be patched to SURVEY for self-patching.440 |
| GROUND | mixed | — | Ground reference jack. OR(1) is normalled to GROUND.440 |
| LEFT out | audio | — | Left output of the VCA/PAN/CROSSFADE block. In pan mode: panned left signal. In crossfade mode: inverse-faded version of the LEFT input.440 |
| LOCATION out | cv | — | Integrator output. Slowly shifts in the direction of the input voltage; freezes at 0V input. Useful for longform gestural modulation.440 |
| MAC | audio | — | Mixed output of all 6 left-column inputs with linear VCA gain controlled by SURVEY. AC coupled mix — will not pass CV signals.440 |
| OR out | mixed | — | Output of OR (Maximum/Peak) function. Outputs the higher of the two OR inputs.440 |
| RIGHT out | audio | — | Right output of the VCA/PAN/CROSSFADE block. In pan mode: panned right signal. In crossfade mode: inverse-faded version of the RIGHT input.440 |
Parameters 3
| Name | Type | Range | Behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| CREASE | menu_setting | — | Aggressive wavefolder for audio or discontinuity inducer for CV. Flips the wave inside-out producing a raspy, amplitude-sensitive timbral transformation. Normalled connection: SLOPE to CREASE.440 |
| LOCATION | menu_setting | — | Integrator of input voltage. Output slowly shifts in the direction of the input voltage, freezing in place when receiving 0V. Larger inputs cause faster movement. Most useful for CV, providing slow longform gestural modulation following.440 |
| SURVEY | knob | — | Meta-control knob that governs all functions throughout Cold Mac. Controls the linear VCA over the MAC mix, the fade/pan position in the VCA/PAN/CROSSFADE block, and the compare level in OR/AND logic. With no inputs patched to left-column jacks, engages Patch Surveillance mode where 8 shaded outputs provide different transfer functions as SURVEY sweeps CCW to CW.440 |
